Since 1961, Ube has hosted a sculpture exhibition, recognized by Guinness World Records® on March 26, 2024, as the “longest-running outdoor sculpture exhibition,” making it a true city of art. Surrounded on three sides by the sea, Yamaguchi Prefecture also offers fresh seafood, and Ube is famous for its delicious fish.

Ube Machiju EVANGELION 2026
Ube City is the hometown of Hideaki Anno, the Chief Director of the "EVANGELION" Series. Inspired by JR Ube-Shinkawa Station appearing as one of the real-life model locations in the series, the city launched "Ube Machiju EVANGELION"—an event that allows fans to fully immerse themselves in the world of EVANGELION.
As part of the 5th installment, a massive the "EVA's Hand" sculpture—weighing approximately 9 tons and measuring around 3.62 meters in length, crafted using the cutting-edge technology of local companies—has been installed in front of JR Ube-Shinkawa Station. After sunset, visitors can enjoy seeing the sculpture illuminated in purple.
This year, "Ube Machiju EVANGELION 2026" is underway once again in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, running until Sunday, March 14, 2027. The city is packed with exciting events where you can experience the world of EVANGELION, including the ever-popular gourmet fair and stamp rally, specially drawn illustrations, and the “Ube Machi-Eva Gallery,” a special exhibition space inside JR Ube-Shinkawa Station.
